Why do I Photograph?

This is a question that I have been asked a million times by my relatives and friends. And this is the same question that I have asked myself a zillion times – every time I have wanted to try something new or I have felt lost in my journey of photography.
I feel this question keeps me rooted as a photographer and stirs me away from distractions. For example, in today’s world of social media, I feel so tempted to create a similar photograph that I have seen on Instagram. Trust me, it is super tempting! But, then it is at this moment that I ask myself – Why do I photograph? Is it too create an image visualised by someone else?

Many a times I feel overwhelmed when shooting at places/events which are buzzing with simultaneous activities. For example, the ghats of Varanasi or the shores of Kulasekharpatnam during the Kulasai Dasara. There are so many things happening around me, so many photographers shooting and getting amazing photos and I have practically no photos at all. I am simply stunned by the magnanimity of the moment. Frozen – not knowing what to shoot and more important, what not to shoot. And that’s when I ask myself my most favourite question ‘ Why do I photograph?’ Is it to create award winning photos? Is it to increase my post likes and followers on Instagram? Is it to showcase to the world ‘what a brilliant photographer I am’? Why? Why do I Photograph?
And each time.. every time.. every single time.. I get the same answer.
“I photograph for myself.
To create an image from my experience of what I have seen, heard and felt.
An image; that I will like. (Irrespective of whether anyone else likes it or not.)”
I believe 'photography and life' - have a lot in common. And one of the commonalities is always 'Remembering the Why'.
Do you love to photograph too? Would love to know ‘why’? Do share in the comments.

Why do I photograph? I realise my answer never changes. I do it for the pure joy — for the freedom this art form gives me to express myself and that feeling is truly priceless.
